Q&A: UC licenses some of the scientific discoveries that are made on campus. Could some of the patent income streams be directed towards the retirement system?

This is an interesting suggestion; however, the total income that the University receives from technology agreements with industry is very small compared with the annual increase in UCRP liabilities.  For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, total income from these agreements totaled $124.8 million compared to an increase of $1.1 billion in UCRP liabilities.  The bottom line is that there is no available income stream that will lessen the need for employer and employee contributions to fund UCRP.
